LPG Association Chairman calls for reopening JJVL LPG Plant
Irfan Khokhar, chairman of the Pakistan LPG Industries Association, has written to Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif, requesting to resume operations of the JJVL LPG plant to meet local gas demand.
Irfan Khokhar, Founder and Chairman of the LPG Industries Association of Pakistan, has made a request in a letter written to Prime Minister Mian Shehbaz Sharif.
Khokhar said that its closure has reduced local LPG production, resulting in a significant shortfall and a 172% increase in LPG prices in just two years. Due to increasing international costs, local LPG prices rose to Rs 247/kg from Rs 90/kg two years ago.
The closure of the JJVL plant from June 21, 2020, to March 31, 2022 (21 months) resulted in a loss to the national exchequer of around 50 billion rupees. This willful damage to Pakistan’s LPG industry, Sui Southern Gas Company Limited shareholders, and the national treasury was done due to incompetence by SSGC management.
Adding salt to the wound, despite instructions from the Ministry of Energy (Petroleum Division) on October 1 and November 9, 2021, SSGC has not yet resumed the supply to JJVL for LPG production.
Appreciating Prime Minister Shehbaz’s efforts for the prosperity of the poor people of Pakistan, Mr. Irfan Khokhar lauded the PM’s bold decisions taken in the past for the progress and benefit of Pakistan.
SSGC opts not to extend LPG agreement for ulterior motives: JJVL
“You have been delivering to the poor people of Pakistan, and the LPG Industries Association of Pakistan hopes that your government’s dedication to the poor will continue in the future.
JJVL LPG Plant’s contribution to the LPG industry
JJVL can contribute to the LPG industry by producing 10,000MT to 12,000MT monthly, enough to meet the needs of 750,000 homes while employing more than 5000 people.
According to the letter, JJVL, Asia’s largest LPG production facility, closed on July 21, 2020, due to SSGC’s negligence and arrogance. Pakistan’s poor people are bearing the additional burden of LPG imports due to its closure.
“We request you to please restore operations of JJVL on an urgent basis so that it can play its role in maintaining the supply chain of LPG in Pakistan by reducing LPG shortfall in the country by which National Exchequer will also get the benefit of Billions of Rupees annually”.
