The Punjab Livestock and Dairy Development Department has launched a large-scale genetic improvement initiative to enhance the productivity of indigenous cattle.

Deputy Director Livestock Dr Jamshaid Akhtar stated that the government has allocated Rs 1 billion for the program to distribute one million high-quality semen doses.

Under this initiative, Brahman semen is available for Rs 500 per dose, while Friesian semen costs Rs 150, ensuring affordable access to premium cattle genetics.

The project aims to significantly boost both milk production and meat yield among local cow breeds, strengthening Punjab’s livestock sector and rural economy.

Dr Akhtar explained that most cows in Punjab’s rural areas belong to non-descriptive breeds with limited milk potential, needing urgent genetic improvement for productivity.

He added that the new program will enhance genetic traits, helping cows produce more milk and achieve faster weight gain under improved breeding standards.

To be eligible, cows must produce between three and five liters of milk daily, remain disease-free, reproductively active, and have calved at least once.

Dr Akhtar said superior semen will help farmers breed healthier, stronger, and more productive animals, supporting future generations of genetically improved livestock.

The program also emphasizes developing elite bulls, enhancing field performance, and building the technical skills of farmers and veterinary teams across Punjab.

Livestock owners have been encouraged to visit nearby veterinary hospitals or certified insemination technicians to avail the subsidized doses under this development program.
