PCB confirms two new PSL teams for Gilgit and Faisalabad

The Pakistan Super League will expand to eight teams with additions based in Gilgit and Faisalabad, the Pakistan Cricket Board announced Wednesday.

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) confirmed on Wednesday that the Pakistan Super League (PSL) will add two new franchises based in Gilgit and Faisalabad.

The expansion comes after an independent valuation of the league’s existing franchises and commercial assets.

The board had earlier shortlisted six candidate cities for the new teams — Hyderabad, Sialkot, Muzaffarabad, Faisalabad, Gilgit and Rawalpindi — giving potential franchise buyers regional choice.

The bidding process has been formally launched, with technical proposals required by December 15, 2025. The move marks a shift from the six-team format used to date, as the league gears up to operate eight franchises from the 2026 edition onward.

Also under consideration is the fate of the Multan Sultans franchise, whose ownership issues remain unresolved and may soon be placed up for new bids.

By extending the league’s footprint beyond its traditional bases, the PCB aims to increase regional representation and boost commercial reach.

CEO Salman Naseer had previously flagged this objective, saying expansion was part of the long-term strategy to make the PSL “bigger”.

The announcement comes as the PSL enters a new phase of growth, with media rights, sponsorships and fan engagement all expected to scale up under an eight-team model.
The PCB says the expansion, franchise valuation and sale process will reshape the league’s competitive and business structure for coming years.
