Toyota recalls 550,007 Highlander SUVs

Toyota is recalling 550,007 Highlander and Highlander Hybrid vehicles in the United States after regulators flagged a seat-back locking issue that could raise injury risks in a crash.

Toyota is recalling 550,007 vehicles because of a seat-back locking issue, according to a notice filed with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. The recall covers 420,771 Highlander and 129,236 Highlander Hybrid vehicles from model years 2021 through 2024.

Federal regulators said second-row seat backs may fail to lock into position during seat-back adjustment. That defect could prevent the seat from properly restraining occupants in a crash at higher speeds, increasing the risk of injury, the notice said.

The NHTSA said owners of affected vehicles will be asked to return their vehicles to a Toyota dealer. Dealers will replace the return springs in the recliner assemblies with improved parts at no cost to customers.

Owner notification letters are expected to be mailed in April. Toyota Motor Corp. shares were last quoted at 220.77, down 0.24, or 0.11%.

The latest action follows another recent Toyota recall. Last month, the company recalled around 141,000 Prius and Prius Prime vehicles after discovering that rear doors could unexpectedly open while the car was moving.

FOX Business reached out to Toyota for comment. The Highlander recall adds to a series of recent vehicle safety actions across the auto industry, including other recalls reported by major manufacturers in recent weeks.
