Pakistan issues iPhone security advisory

CERT warns users to adopt strict cyber hygiene amid rising threats

Pakistan’s National Cyber Emergency Response Team has issued a cybersecurity advisory urging iPhone users to adopt stronger security practices to counter evolving digital threats, including sophisticated zero-click attacks.

The advisory emphasizes keeping iPhones updated to the latest iOS version to ensure protection against known vulnerabilities. Users are also advised to enable Lockdown Mode, a feature designed to provide enhanced protection against targeted cyberattacks.

Authorities stressed the importance of using strong passcodes and enabling two-factor authentication on Apple IDs to prevent unauthorized access. Regular device restarts were also recommended as a basic but effective security measure.

The advisory warned users to verify links before clicking, particularly those received through messages or emails, which are common vectors for phishing attacks. It also encouraged reporting suspicious activity to relevant CERT teams or organizational IT departments for timely response.

At the same time, the agency cautioned against using outdated iOS versions, noting that older software may lack critical security patches. Users were urged to avoid clicking on unknown or suspicious links that could compromise device security.

The advisory further highlighted risks associated with installing unknown configuration profiles or VPNs, which can expose sensitive data. It also advised against connecting to untrusted Wi-Fi networks, which are often exploited for cyber intrusions.

Officials warned users not to ignore unusual account activity or security alerts, as these may indicate ongoing unauthorized access attempts. Prompt action in such cases can help prevent further compromise.

The National Cyber Emergency Response Team noted that even advanced threats such as zero-click attacks can be mitigated through proactive security hygiene and awareness.

The advisory reflects growing concerns over mobile security as smartphone usage expands across Pakistan’s digital ecosystem, with authorities urging continued vigilance to safeguard personal and organizational data.
