FBR to Penalise False Tax Return Information
The Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) has announced stringent measures to penalise taxpayers who submit false or misleading information in their income tax returns. This crackdown aims to enhance tax compliance and ensure accurate disclosure of assets and income.
Automated Verification with AI
The FBR intends to leverage an automated system integrated with artificial intelligence to compare taxpayers’ declarations against its comprehensive database of property and asset records nationwide. This approach is designed to efficiently detect inconsistencies and potential concealment of assets or document tampering.
Penalty Framework for Non-Compliance
According to FBR sources, individuals found providing incorrect data may face severe financial penalties. For salaried taxpayers, the fine could amount to as much as 75 percent of their salary. Additionally, failure to settle penalties promptly may incur an extra charge of Rs1,000 per day.
Taxpayers have been given a deadline until October 15 to review and amend any inaccurate information contained in their returns to avoid these sanctions.
Implications for Pakistani Taxpayers
This initiative reflects the FBR’s commitment to strengthening tax enforcement amid ongoing efforts to broaden the country’s tax base. For Pakistani citizens, this means heightened scrutiny of declared incomes and assets, promoting transparency and fairness in the taxation system. It also underscores the government’s drive to plug revenue leakages, which could enhance public service delivery funded through taxes.
FBR spokesperson stated, “Taxpayers must ensure complete accuracy in their returns to avoid substantial penalties.”
