Sohail Afridi, Cabinet Members Detained Amid K-P Emergency
Following the imposition of emergency and governor’s rule in Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa (K-P), former Chief Minister Sohail Afridi along with several cabinet members have been placed under preventive custody, confirmed Minister of State for Interior Talal Chaudhry on October 12, 2026.
Preventive Detentions and Political Crackdown
According to Chaudhry, those detained will face legal actions if they have pending cases; otherwise, they will be released. The detentions occurred on Sunday, shortly after President Asif Ali Zardari approved the emergency measures on the Prime Minister’s recommendation. The Deputy Inspector General of Police in Peshawar confirmed that Afridi remains in protective custody, alongside eight senior Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leaders, including Junaid Akbar and K-P Assembly Speaker Babar Saleem Swati.
Police also arrested 169 PTI workers across various locations in Swabi district amid concerns over potential disruptions due to the party’s long march that started on October 4. Officials deployed substantial police forces in the area, with further arrests anticipated to maintain law and order.
Federal Takeover of K-P Governance
The emergency declaration cited a deteriorating security situation and a lack of effective provincial government action against terrorism. Under Articles 232(1) and 234(1) of the Constitution, the federal government assumed powers over K-P’s administration, suspending the provincial assembly and dissolving the cabinet. Army troops were also deployed under Article 245 to safeguard public safety and government installations.
An 11-member advisory council has been assembled to oversee governance in the province, consisting of military officials and civilian experts. Sanaullah Advocate was appointed as the provincial advocate general to manage legal affairs during this interim period.
Implications for Pakistan’s Security and Governance
The emergency measures in K-P have highlighted the federal government’s intent to assert control over a province grappling with persistent security threats and administrative challenges. This move aims to curtail the influence of opposition parties such as PTI, which has been vocally critical of the government’s policies. For Pakistan, the events in K-P underscore ongoing struggles to balance security imperatives with political stability, particularly in regions bordering conflict zones.
Talal Chaudhry’s confirmation of the preventive custody detentions reflects a broader clampdown on political dissent as the government seeks to restore order. The impact on local governance and democratic processes will be closely monitored by stakeholders across the country.
