Guyana Oil Exports Reach 1 Million Barrels Per Day
Guyana is set to surpass a significant benchmark in its oil industry by exporting over 1 million barrels of crude daily for the first time in December. This achievement comes just seven years after ExxonMobil’s initial discoveries spawned the nation’s emergence as a notable oil producer.
Rapid Growth in Guyana’s Oil Production
The country marked its entry into the oil market in 2019 with the launch of production from the Liza Phase 1 project, which had an initial capacity near 120,000 barrels per day (bpd). Since then, Guyana’s oil output has surged due to continuous developments and additional Floating Production, Storage and Offloading (FPSO) units.
Following the initial success, the Liza Unity FPSO began operations in 2022 adding 220,000 bpd, while subsequent FPSOs such as Prosperity and ONE GUYANA expanded output further. By late 2025, production reached 900,000 bpd, highlighting the fast-paced growth of the sector.
Upcoming Developments Boosting Production Capacity
The milestone of exceeding one million barrels per day is supported by new projects entering service. The $12.7 billion Uaru development, with the Errea Wittu FPSO capable of handling 250,000 bpd, will start exports in December 2026. Following this, the Whiptail project is anticipated to commence operations by the end of 2027, ensuring continued production growth.
These expansions are pushing Guyana’s oil output toward a forecasted 1.7 million bpd by 2030, positioning the small South American nation among prominent non-OPEC oil exporters.
Why This Matters for Pakistan
Guyana’s rapid ascent in oil production has broad implications for global energy markets, including countries like Pakistan, which are seeking stable and diverse oil suppliers to bolster energy security. The entry of new prolific producers helps alleviate supply risks and can potentially affect global crude pricing, indirectly impacting Pakistan’s fuel import costs.
Moreover, Guyana’s experience demonstrates how targeted investments and strategic partnerships can transform emerging economies through energy sector development—a model that Pakistan might consider in leveraging its own oil and gas resources to boost economic growth.
As Guyana’s oil sector continues to expand, it could play a greater role in shaping regional energy dynamics, making it a notable player for energy watchers worldwide.
As ExxonMobil’s lead executive succinctly put it, “Our progress in Guyana showcases how rapidly transformative energy projects can unlock significant value in frontier regions.”
