PTA Chief Highlights Daily Cyber Threats Targeting Pakistanis

Pakistan faces relentless cyberattacks, with individuals frequently receiving fraudulent calls and deceptive one-time password (OTP) messages, according to Major General Hafeez ur Rehman, Chairman of the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA). The warning came during the closing event of Cyber Security Awareness Week, underscoring the ongoing digital threats confronting the nation’s telecom users.

Cybersecurity Challenges in Pakistan

Major General Hafeez ur Rehman revealed that expansive networks churn out thousands of counterfeit videos daily, which contribute to public misinformation and vulnerability. Telecom operators and government agencies, including NADRA and PEMRA, have fortified their defenses to counter diverse cyber threats. However, the telecom sector remains susceptible to exploitation despite these efforts.

He also emphasized the proactive role of the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) in tackling such digital crimes. Moreover, the PTA chairman cautioned against sharing unverified information, advocating for heightened public vigilance as a key line of defense in Pakistan’s cybersecurity strategy.

Policy and Public Awareness: Pillars for Cybersecurity

Federal Minister for Information and Broadcasting, Attaullah Tarar, highlighted the imperative for a regulatory framework that evolves alongside technological advancements. He stressed the importance of implementing digital literacy programs in educational institutions to prepare younger generations for cyber risks.

“Digital education should begin early, equipping children and youth with the necessary skills to navigate social media safely and identify fake news,” Tarar stated at the event. He further called on the government to engage stakeholders, organize training initiatives, and disseminate crucial cybersecurity information nationwide.

Why Cybersecurity Matters for Pakistan

With the expansion of mobile technology and internet access across Pakistan, cyber threats pose significant risks not just to individuals but to the country’s economic and digital infrastructure. Ensuring public awareness and establishing strong regulatory measures are vital for safeguarding Pakistan’s digital future. As cyberattacks become increasingly sophisticated, coordinated efforts between government bodies and society are essential to protect personal data and maintain trust in digital services.
