EloElo Raises $80M to Grow India’s Microdrama Market

Indian startup EloElo has secured $80 million in a Series C funding round, boosting its valuation to $500 million. This investment highlights the rapid growth of microdramas in India, a format that packages TV dramas into vertical, bite-sized episodes designed for mobile viewing. The round was led by NBCUniversal, alongside Hornbill Capital, marking a major Hollywood entry into India’s expanding mobile entertainment sector.

Microdramas Captivate Millions in India

EloElo’s platform, StoryTV, caters to over 33 million monthly users who spend an impressive average of 95 minutes daily on the app. The short episodes, ranging from one to three minutes, are designed to be easily consumed on smartphones in vertical scroll format, resonating strongly with India’s fast-growing internet populace. StoryTV offers more than 5,000 titles across six Indian languages, covering genres like drama, thriller, romance, and family narratives.

Founded in 2020 by former Flipkart executive Saurabh Pandey, EloElo has partnered with major content producers such as Balaji Telefilms to expand original programming. Pandey emphasized the shift in content consumption habits, explaining that the new generation prefers mobile-friendly entertainment that fits into brief moments throughout the day rather than traditional appointment-based TV viewing.

Challenges and Future Outlook for Microdramas

Despite strong engagement, monetization remains a hurdle. While EloElo offers various subscription plans alongside ad-supported free content, only about 15 to 17 million users currently pay for premium access. The majority remain on the free tier, posing challenges in converting high user engagement into sustainable revenue.

Still, analysts are optimistic about the sector’s potential, estimating the Indian microdrama market could reach $3 to $4 billion annually by 2030, fueled by the country’s billion-plus internet users. To help scale production, EloElo is developing AI-powered tools through its Dolphin platform, assisting creators in editing and video generation, although human creative input remains essential.

Implications for Pakistan’s Entertainment Industry

The surge of microdramas in India is significant for Pakistani audiences, who often consume content from across the border. As mobile-first serialized storytelling gains momentum, this format could influence Pakistan’s drama industry to explore similar approaches. With smartphone penetration rising in South Asia, bite-sized content customized for mobile consumption may present new opportunities for creators and viewers alike.

“The next billion users will likely grow up watching content on their phones rather than traditional TV,” Saurabh Pandey noted, highlighting the broader shift shaping South Asia’s entertainment landscape.
