Power Firms Seek Rs23 Billion Hike in Electricity Bills
Electricity consumers across Pakistan may soon face higher bills as power distribution companies have submitted a request to the National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) to recover an additional Rs23.33 billion under the quarterly adjustment mechanism.
Details of the Proposed Increase
The companies’ petition covers the adjustments for the third quarter of 2026, spanning from July to September. It includes proposed recoveries amounting to Rs38.92 billion for capacity charges and Rs5.597 billion for operations and maintenance expenses. A planned deduction of Rs29.25 billion relating to an incremental package reduces the overall amount sought from consumers to Rs23.33 billion.
This adjustment proposal is set to affect electricity users nationwide, including those served by Karachi Electric (K-Electric).
NEPRA’s Role and Upcoming Decision
NEPRA will conduct a hearing on November 17 to review the petition before making a final determination regarding any tariff increases. The regulator’s decision will dictate the exact rise in the per-unit electricity price moving forward.
Why This Matters for Pakistani Consumers
Electricity tariff increments have a direct impact on household and commercial budgets. An increase of this magnitude could exacerbate the already rising cost of living and operational expenses for businesses throughout Pakistan. Consumers and stakeholders eagerly await NEPRA’s ruling as energy costs remain a significant concern for economic stability and growth.
Azhar Gul, an energy analyst, commented, “Such adjustments underline the challenges in balancing the financial needs of power companies with consumer affordability.”
