Cable Theft Disables 33 Traffic Signals in Karachi

Karachi is facing a growing traffic management crisis as cable theft disrupts 33 out of 94 traffic signals across the city. The persistent thefts of cables and related equipment are severely affecting the functionality of critical traffic infrastructure, worsening the traffic conditions in the city.

Repair Efforts Hampered by Recurring Thefts

In response to the issue, the Sindh government allocated Rs100 million for repairing traffic signals, along with updating lane markings and road signs. Following this, 20 traffic signals, including five automated ones, were fixed. However, within a short time, thieves targeted seven of the repaired locations again, stealing cables and rendering several signals non-operational once more.

The areas most impacted by these disruptions include key parts of Karachi such as Boat Basin, Ziauddin Road, Guru Mandir, I.I. Chundrigar Road, Aram Bagh, Yaseenabad, and Singer Chowrangi. Due to the frequent outages, traffic police are often compelled to manually regulate traffic at affected junctions, adding to their workload and increasing the risk of congestion and accidents.

Challenges and Implications for Karachi Commuters

The problem persists despite increased deployment of digital traffic enforcement and surveillance cameras across the city. Officials from the Traffic Engineering Bureau have also pointed to budgetary constraints and unpaid contractor fees as obstacles to timely repairs and maintenance.

For Karachi’s everyday commuters, the malfunctioning signals translate to longer travel times, chaotic intersections, and heightened congestion in an already overwhelmed urban transport environment. The ongoing cable thefts not only undermine public safety but also impose additional burdens on traffic management resources and city infrastructure budgets.

One traffic official commented on the situation, stating, “The thefts are affecting our ability to maintain smooth traffic flow, creating more challenges in an already difficult environment.”

Context and Importance for Pakistan

Karachi, as Pakistan’s largest metropolis and economic hub, depends heavily on efficient traffic management for its daily operations. The breakdown of essential traffic signals due to cable theft not only impacts local commuters but also affects the broader economic activities that rely on seamless city transport. Addressing this issue is crucial to improving urban mobility and ensuring road safety in a city with a population exceeding 15 million.
