China to Send Pakistani Astronaut on Tiangong Space Mission
China has announced that a Pakistani astronaut will be the first foreign national to join the upcoming Shenzhou-24 mission to its Tiangong space station. This marks a significant step forward in the expanding space collaboration between China and Pakistan.
Pakistani Astronaut to Participate in Short-Duration Mission
The Chinese Manned Space Agency (CMSA) revealed that the selected Pakistani astronaut will serve as a payload specialist during the mission. The astronaut will undertake a brief orbital journey before returning to Earth aboard the Shenzhou-23 spacecraft, which docked with the station earlier in May. Although the astronaut’s identity and the exact launch date have not been disclosed, the mission is anticipated to take place by the end of 2026.
Background of Pak-China Space Cooperation
In April, China indicated that two Pakistani astronauts, Muhammad Zeeshan Ali and Khurram Daud, had been chosen to begin training in China. One of these trainees is expected to be part of the Shenzhou-24 mission. This development follows the February 2025 agreement between the two countries to establish an astronaut training program in China. Under this agreement, Pakistani astronauts will receive rigorous training and participate in short-term space missions alongside their Chinese counterparts.
Why This Matters for Pakistan
This historic mission underscores the deepening ties in science and technology between Pakistan and China, beyond their existing strategic and economic partnership. China is Pakistan’s largest trading partner and a major investor, and cooperation in space exploration enhances Pakistan’s status in high-technology fields. With China advancing its space program and planning manned lunar missions by 2030, Pakistan’s involvement could pave the way for further collaborations and technological exchange.
As this milestone approaches, it reflects Pakistan’s growing ambitions in space science and offers inspiration to the country’s scientific community and youth. The mission also highlights the potential benefits of international partnerships in achieving complex scientific goals.
Chen Dong, a spokesperson for CMSA, noted, “This mission symbolizes the friendship and close partnership between China and Pakistan, taking our collaboration to new heights in space exploration.”
