COMSTECH Partners with China to Boost Food Science Research

The Organisation of Islamic Cooperation’s scientific arm, COMSTECH, has formalized cooperation with three prestigious Chinese institutes to enhance research and development in food nutrition and functional foods. This collaboration was announced at the China-Pakistan Scientific and Technological Cooperation Conference on Food and Medicinal Resources for Nutrition and Health, held recently in Islamabad.

New Agreements to Advance Food and Nutrition Science

During the conference, which convened over 50 experts from academia, industry, and regulatory bodies, Memoranda of Understanding were signed by COMSTECH’s General Coordinator, Prof Dr Muhammad Iqbal Choudhary, alongside representatives from China’s Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs and the Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences. These agreements aim to merge research capabilities, share advanced scientific platforms, and exchange genetic resources to foster innovation across food science sectors.

The partnership will emphasize a range of activities including fundamental studies on food and medicinal resources, development of functional foods, establishment of joint international laboratories, shared research projects, and training of young scientists and technologists. Additionally, the collaboration will support high-profile academic conferences, enhance institutional capacity-building, and bolster ties between Chinese institutions and organizations within OIC member countries.

Significance for Pakistan and OIC Member States

Food security and nutrition continue to be pressing challenges globally, particularly for OIC member states including Pakistan. By leveraging China’s expertise in agricultural sciences and food technology, this alliance promises to deliver practical research solutions and improved access to cutting-edge scientific knowledge and technology. The partnership also enhances opportunities for scientific exchanges, technology transfers, and the development of research infrastructure, which are critical for sustainable agricultural and nutritional advancements.

Prof Dr Muhammad Iqbal Choudhary remarked on the collaboration’s potential, highlighting that combining resources and expertise with Chinese institutions will accelerate innovation and capacity development across the member states, ensuring benefits extend beyond laboratories into real-world applications.

This strategic cooperation between COMSTECH and China marks an important step in advancing scientific research to address food and health-related issues in Pakistan and the wider OIC community.
