Consumers May Face a Cut in Electricity Bills January 2025
Power consumers may enjoy a relief in electricity bills due to a reduction in tariff of Rs 0.71 per unit on account of fuel adjustment charges for the month of November 2025.
They may see a cut in their January 2026 electricity bills after the Central Power Purchasing Agency (CPPA) petitioned NEPRA that distribution companies are willing to refund Rs 0.7182 per unit, citing overcharging in November.

In its petition, filed with NEPRA on behalf of ex-Wapda distribution companies (Discos) and K-Electric, the CPPA said the reference fuel charges for November were Rs6.88/unit, while the actual cost of power generation averaged Rs6.162 unit. The CPPA-G has sought the regulator’s nod for the refund of Rs 0.7182/unit overcharged from the consumers during November through the FCA mechanism.
According to data provided by CPPA-G, total power generation in November stood at 8,050 gigawatt hours (GWh), costing Rs50.09 billion, or Rs6.22/unit.
After accounting for transmission losses, IPP sales and prior adjustments, the net supply to Discos was 7,813 GWh at Rs48.14 billion or Rs6.162/unit, the CPPA-G petition said. The sale price to Discos also includes Rs 0.037/unit on account of prior adjustments.
Hydropower was the largest contributor to the national grid, generating 3,153GWh or 39.16 per cent of the total energy mix. It was followed by nuclear power that contributed 2,031 GWh (25.23pc) at Rs2.2706/unit, while RLNG-based plants produced 696 GWh (8.64pc) at Rs 21.5789/unit, the data revealed.
Local coal contributed 752 GWh (9.34pc) at Rs17.767/unit, imported coal with 407 GWh (5.06pc) at Rs14.135/unit, and 35 GWh was imported from Iran at Rs 22.5729/unit.
Indigenous gas contributed 680 GWh or 8.44pc at Rs14.3396/unit, while no electricity was generated from costly residual fuel oil (RFO) and high-speed diesel.
Share of wind power was 136 GWh, bagasse with 75 GWh at Rs 10.84/unit, and solar 86 GWh. NEPRA has scheduled a public hearing on December 31 to decide the matter. Under federal policy guidelines, FCA for ex-Wapda Discos will also apply to K-Electric customers, ensuring uniformity across distribution companies.
