FIA Tasked To Launch Crackdown against Overbilling

Amid rising electricity bills and fears of load shedding in the recent summer season, the government has tasked the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) to launch a crackdown against overbilling.
The staff of power distribution companies (Discos) have been involved in overbilling of electricity.
Now, FIA has been tasked to launch a crackdown against the overbilling of electricity bills.
Earlier, the PDM government had launched a crackdown against those involved in power theft and claimed to recover Rs 86 billion from the consumers.
However, the National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (Nepra) exposed this fake anti-power theft campaign when it revealed in its inquiry report that millions of consumers were overcharged.
The power regulator has recently issued directives to the power companies to refund the amount charged on account of overbilling.
Now, the Federal Interior Minister has announced to adopt a zero-tolerance policy on over-billing across the country and to take indiscriminate action against the staff involved.

In a statement on Wednesday, the Federal Interior Minister said that over-billing will not be tolerated in any case and no compromise will be made on it.

The minister further said that over-billing is tantamount to cruelty to the public, the staff involved do not deserve any discount, and the public should be given immediate relief on the issue of over-billing.
He maintained that security would be provided to FIA in sensitive areas of Balochistan and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa to control the incidents of electricity theft.
