ADB Approves $250M for Electricity Supply in Pakistan

Staff Report

The Asian Development Bank (ADB) has sanctioned $250 million in loans to enhance the stability of the electricity supply in Pakistan.

The funds will be utilized to expand and improve the power transmission network in the Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa provinces.

The Power Transmission Strengthening Project aims to bolster the national grid’s transmission capacity by extending the high-voltage transmission network, incorporating 500 kilovolt (kV) and 220 kV transmission line loops.

Additionally, the project seeks to decrease transmission losses in Lahore, Punjab, by replacing outdated transmission lines.

Yevgeniy Zhukov, ADB Director General for Central and West Asia, emphasized the importance of a reliable power supply for inclusive and sustainable economic growth.

The project aligns with ADB’s commitment to supporting Pakistan in achieving energy security and enhancing energy efficiency.

The initiative is set to complement ADB’s ongoing assistance to the National Transmission & Despatch Company Limited (NTDC), focusing on energy security, climate resilience, and increased transmission capacity.

The enhancement of the management of Pakistan’s national transmission system is a primary objective.

Beyond strengthening power transmission, ADB’s project will also improve the project and financial management of NTDC.

The initiative aims to enhance NTDC’s ability to incorporate climate resilience in planning and operations. To promote gender equality and women’s involvement in the energy sector, ADB plans to develop mentorship guidelines, conduct awareness campaigns, establish childcare centers, and provide technical training to female staff at NTDC.

The project also includes livelihood skills development for women in the project areas, improving economic opportunities, and training local communities to respond to climate-induced natural hazards.

Pakistan, a founding member of ADB, has received substantial support since 1966, with ADB committing over $52 billion in loans, grants, and financing to promote inclusive economic growth and improve infrastructure, energy, food security, transport networks, and social services.Consumers to Face Rs 1.25 per Unit Increase in Electricity Bills
