PD, Nepra join hands to take action against KE

Islamabad: The Power Division and the NEPRA have joined hands to take action against the K-Electric (KE) authorities in light of the Supreme Court’s orders over Karachi’s electrocution cases.

Power Division has decided to call an important meeting of the board of directors of K-Electric on Monday to implement the Supreme Court’s orders regarding Karachi’s electrocution cases.

Earlier, the Supreme Court had ordered authorities to register murder cases against relevant KE officials for the deaths that had taken place in Karachi due to electrocution during the recent rains, adding that KE CEO Moonis Alvi’s name should be placed on the Exit Control List.

A three-member bench, headed by Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) Justice Gulzar Ahmed and comprising Justice Faisal Arab and Justice Ijazul Ahsan, had issued orders while hearing the case of electrocution deaths and load-shedding in the metropolis at the apex court’s Karachi registry.

An important meeting was held in Power Division on Friday relating to the Supreme Court’s implementation against KE authorities relating to Karachi’s electrocution cases.

The Power Division authorities also held a meeting with officials of the National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (Nepra) in this regard.

Special assistant to Prime Minister on Power Shahzad Qasim, additional secretary power Waseem Mukhtar who is also board member KE, would visit Karachi on Saturday (today) following directions of Prime Minister Imran Khan.

They said that the KE board meeting would meet on Monday following a power division called to make important decisions in light of the Supreme Court’s orders.

Meanwhile, in a statement, Nepra stated that the authority had taken serious notice of deaths due to Karachi’s electrocution during the recent rain spells in July and August 2020. In this regard, the Authority has appointed an Investigation Committee headed by the Director-General (Monitoring & Enforcement) to proceed to Karachi and conduct an investigation against K-Electric to ascertain the facts and possible violations of NEPRA laws. After completing the investigation, the Investigation Committee shall submit a detailed report to the Authority for further appropriate action by the law.

During the public hearing, the CJP has stated that the city should not be without electricity for even a minute. Warning KE, CJP further said that the load-shedding could continue only on those places where there are KE offices or their official residence. Otherwise, there would be no power at KE offices and its officials’ homes.
