FIA Investigates Alleged Smart Meter Scam

Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) has launched an inquiry into alleged corruption worth about Rs 6.5 billion linked to a smart electricity meter project.
According to the investigation, the contract for supplying 300,000 smart meters was allegedly awarded in violation of prescribed procedures.
The details further added that the FIA has said it is examining how the contract was issued and whether rules were breached during the process.
On the agency’s instructions, several electricity distribution companies, including LESCO, GEPCO, MEPCO and FESCO, have submitted records to investigators.
These documents relate to contracts, tenders and payments associated with the project. Sources said more than 1,000 pages of records have been handed over, including bidding payments made by LESCO.

Investigators have also obtained audit objections, internal notes, warnings and documents related to decisions on blacklisting firms or allowing them to continue operations.
The FIA is examining allegations of illegal tenders, forged documents and abuse of authority. Sources within the agency said companies that had already been dissolved were allegedly allowed to participate unlawfully in the bidding process.
Officials from LESCO, GEPCO, MEPCO and FESCO were questioned by the FIA for around three hours, with each officer submitting written responses to 20 questions.
Preliminary findings indicate possible connivance by some LESCO officials, according to FIA sources. Investigators have also alleged that the project resulted in losses of hundreds of millions of rupees to the national exchequer.
