Iran Decides to Close Its Border with Afghanistan
TEHRAN: Iran has opted to close its border with Afghanistan as part of an effort to combat infiltration and terrorism.
This decision was made following a rise in terrorist activities and incursions from Afghanistan. Recently, Iranian Defence Minister Mohammad Reza Ashtiani stated that the resurgence and activation of terrorist factions in Afghanistan pose a significant threat to the region.
He noted that the Kerman bombing involved terrorists who entered Iran from Afghanistan, resulting in severe damage to the country’s security.
Since the Taliban’s takeover, there has been a marked increase in terrorism and drug trafficking by illegal migrants through the Afghan border.
The report highlights that over eight million Afghan nationals are living illegally in Iran, with five million having already been deported by Iranian authorities. Additionally, it mentions that Iran’s eastern and southeastern regions are increasingly being used as key routes for drug trafficking into Europe.
