Karachi Faces Gas Outages During Sehri and Iftar

Karachi residents experienced significant gas outages during Sehri and Iftar hours despite prior assurances from the Sui Southern Gas Company (SSGC) about uninterrupted supply throughout Ramadan.

The disruptions affected multiple localities including Korangi, Jamshed Road, Bihar Colony, North Karachi, and Liaquatabad, among others.

In addition to complete outages, many areas reported extremely low gas pressure, complicating cooking efforts even where gas was technically available. This has caused frustration among residents who rely on timely gas supply to prepare meals for breaking their fast during the holy month.

Earlier, both SSGC and Sui Northern Gas Pipelines Limited (SNGPL) had announced a Ramadan-specific gas schedule, promising gas availability from 3:00 am to 10:30 pm daily.

Federal Minister for Petroleum Ali Pervaiz Malik had reiterated the government’s commitment to ensuring adherence to this schedule nationwide, emphasizing arrangements made to maintain adequate gas pressure during critical Sehri and Iftar hours.

On the electricity front, Federal Minister for Energy Awais Leghari declared that no load-shedding would occur during Sehri and Iftar periods.

The Power Division was directed to guarantee uninterrupted power supply during these times, even in areas with traditionally high electricity losses. Load management measures, if necessary, were to be implemented outside the designated windows.

K-Electric, Karachi’s sole power distributor, also released a Ramadan schedule confirming that the city would not face load-shedding during Sehri and Iftar to provide relief to residents observing the fast.

Despite these official commitments, the gas outages have raised concerns about the reliability of energy supplies during Ramadan, a period when demand typically surges.

Residents have urged the authorities and gas companies to take immediate corrective actions to prevent further disruptions and ensure smooth energy availability throughout the holy month.
