Neelum Jhelum achieves Peak Generation of 969 MW
Staff report
Neelum Jhelum Hydroelectric Project reached its peak generation capacity of 969 MW on March 28, 2024.
The project resumed operations earlier this month following the inspection of its tail race tunnel (TRT) and has since been consistently generating electricity for the National Grid, particularly during the Sehr and Iftar times of Ramadan.
During the low-flow season, operations at the Neelum Jhelum Hydroelectric Project were temporarily halted on January 10 to inspect the rehabilitated tail race tunnel.
After this, a thorough inspection was conducted, including an evaluation by an International Panel of Experts, before the project resumed generation earlier this month. Neelum Jhelum plant’s closure: Consumers pay Rs 350m daily
The Neelum Jhelum project is noteworthy for being primarily located underground beneath high mountains.
Completed in 2018 on the Neelum River in Azad Jammu and Kashmir, it consists of a dam at Nauseri, a 52-kilometer network of tunnels, and an underground powerhouse at Chattar Kalas housing four power generating units of 242.25 MW each.
The Neelum Jhelum Hydroelectric Project has produced a total of 19.562 billion units of environmentally friendly electricity.
