Pakistan-China Launch Green Channel at Sost-Khunjerab Border
Pakistan and China have initiated a Green Channel at the Sost-Khunjerab border to streamline trade of agricultural products. This development aims to expedite customs procedures and bolster bilateral trade efficiency between the two nations.
Details of the Green Channel Agreement
The agreement was formalized through an online signing ceremony held at the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) Headquarters in Islamabad. It covers an agreed list of agricultural and allied products eligible for priority customs processing. Both countries’ customs administrations will implement risk-based controls to ensure thorough inspections while facilitating faster clearance.
Under this mechanism, perishable goods will receive prioritized handling to prevent delays, ensuring timely delivery. Enhanced exchange of information and risk alerts between Pakistani and Chinese customs authorities will further strengthen cross-border coordination.
Significance for Pakistan’s Trade
The operationalization of this Green Channel is expected to create a more effective framework for trade, reducing bottlenecks and improving the overall flow of goods through one of the key Pakistan-China trade gateways. This move is particularly crucial for Pakistan considering its strategic economic ties with China and the importance of agricultural exports to its economy.
Syed Shakeel Shah, headed the Pakistani delegation and highlighted the mutual commitment to improved customs collaboration. The Chinese side was represented by Ms. Li Qingua, Deputy Head of Urumqi Customs.
Why This Matters to Pakistan
For Pakistan, easier and faster access to the Chinese market can stimulate the agricultural sector, foster exports, and enhance trade volumes. Given that Pakistan-China trade relations form a critical part of the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) framework, any development easing cross-border trade operations will have a positive impact on economic growth and regional integration.
