Safety Scandal in Japan Raises Concerns for Pakistani-Made Cars

The fraud by Japanese car makers in safety test results has raised questions about the Pakistani-made cars.
In a recent report, the investigation has unveiled a fraud Japanese car makers have been making to falsify safety results to get certification for selling new vehicles.
Toyota Motor Corp. Chairman Akio Toyoda has called for an apology for this fraud being committed by the car company.
The investigation has found Toyota, Mazda, Honda, and Suzuki committing fraud in safety results so that they could get certificates for selling new vehicles.
In Pakistan, there are three popular brands Toyota, Honda, and Suzuki that have been manufacturing cars for decades.
Consumers in Pakistan have been raising serious concerns over the poor quality of cars being manufactured by these brands.
Even, consumers have been concerned over the safety of the cars being manufactured by these Japanese-based brands.
The investigation was launched after the government had come to knowledge about the fraud being done by Daihatsu, a Toyota subsidiary.
Some other auto firms were also reported in such fraud.
The government had launched a probe against 85 car manufacturers.
Out of them, five popular car makers like Toyota, Mazda, Honda, and Suzuki, including engine maker Yamaha were found involved in committing fraud.
Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism in a statement said that these companies were involved in committing fraud during approval of applications.key cabinet members blast at local car makers
The companies were required approval of applications relating to fulfilling requirements of legal, technical, safety, and environmental.
The ministry said that fraudulent activities in type-approval applications had undermined the users’ results. They also weakened the foundations of the automobile certification system.
The ministry regretted informing that these car markers had followed new fraudulent activities.
Mazda was involved in falsifying crash-test vehicle results and Suzuki also committed fraud about braking-system test results for one model.
Honda had been involved in tampering with noise testing.
Though the investigation into Toyota continues, but it had also come to light during the probe that it had submitted false data in pedestrian-protection tests.
It had also ‘falsified’ crash-test vehicles for seven vehicle models.
Meanwhile, Toyota Chairman Akio Toyoda issued a statement on Monday seeking an apology.
Toyota’s Japanese rival Mazda Motor Corporation had also admitted deviations in crash tests on three models that had been discontinued models.
Tokyo-based Honda Motor Company had also sought an apology for involving in improper tests.
The ministry had announced to probe the five companies further. It further said that it would take strict action based on its results.
Analysts say that keeping in view the fraud by Japanese car markers, the government of Pakistan should also launch an investigation into Pakistani companies, Toyota and Honda.
The consumers had several safety concerns but they were never addressed.
