Power Bills Likely to Climb as Costs Escalate
Electricity consumers nationwide may face higher bills next month as NEPRA considers a request from the Central Power Purchasing Agency for tariff adjustments.
The agency has asked for a rise of 19 paisa per unit under the fuel cost adjustment mechanism, citing increased production expenses in August.
Reports confirm distribution companies received 102.94 billion units during August, but the average generation cost rose to Rs7.50 per unit from Rs7.31 in July.
Electricity from local coal cost Rs12.01 per unit, while imported coal-based power was higher at Rs14.07 per unit during the same period.
Furnace oil generation reached Rs33 per unit, natural gas stood at Rs13.43 per unit, while bagasse-based power was Rs9.87 per unit.
LNG-based electricity was priced at Rs21.73 per unit, whereas imports from Iran remained the most expensive at Rs41 per unit overall.

NEPRA is expected to issue its decision in the coming days, which could add to consumer burdens nationwide.
Meanwhile, Petrol and diesel prices in Pakistan may increase from October 1 as the federal government reviews a petroleum industry proposal submitted to OGRA.
The suggested adjustment includes a Rs 2 per litre rise in petrol and Rs 2.48 per litre increase in high-speed diesel prices.
Additionally, the proposal recommends raising kerosene prices by Rs 4.65 per litre and light diesel prices by Rs 1.76 per litre.
The Prime Minister will make the final decision after consultations with the finance ministry, with new rates potentially replacing current levels announced on September 16.
