Electricity prices are likely to increase by Rs0.48 per unit for one month under fuel price adjustment mechanism, following a request submitted to regulator authority.

The Central Power Purchasing Agency has filed a petition with the National Electric Power Regulatory Authority, seeking an increase in electricity tariffs for December period.

NEPRA is scheduled to hold a hearing on the application, as part of the regulatory process, to review the request submitted by the agency formally.

According to the petition, total of 8.487 billion units of electricity were generated during December, while 8.208 billion units were supplied to distribution companies country.

The CPPA said the average cost of electricity in December stood at Rs9.62 per unit as calculated under applicable fuel price adjustment methodology used officially.

It also shared details of the power generation mix during the month covering hydel coal gas LNG nuclear contributions percentages reported for December period officially.

Hydel power accounted for 18.07 percent of total electricity generation, while local coal contributed 13.99 percent during December as reported in the petition submitted officially.

Electricity produced from imported coal made up 10.13 percent of the total electricity generation mix during December according to figures provided by CPPA petition text.

Generation from natural gas was recorded at 11.20 percent, while imported liquefied natural gas accounted for 17.24 percent of overall output during December reporting period.

Nuclear power formed the largest share, contributing 25.05 percent of total generation in December according to petition data submitted by CPPA to regulator formally documented.

If approved by NEPRA, the proposed adjustment will be passed on to consumers through their electricity bills for one month, adding to overall cost power.
