Punjab To Conduct E-Taxi Balloting

Punjab To Conduct E-Taxi Balloting in Last Week of Nov

The Punjab has announced to conduct the balloting for E-taxi scheme during last week of November amid rising demand of public.

The Punjab government unveiled the E-Taxi Scheme on 17 Sept 2025 offering 1,100 Chinese-import electric taxis and five-year interest-free financing.

The Government of the Punjab on September 17 formally launched its E-Taxi Scheme 2025, announcing the distribution of 1,100 electric taxis imported from China. A quota of 30 vehicles is reserved exclusively for women drivers. The financing plan allows applicants to repay over five years without interest.

Under the publicised plan, the first phase will introduce the full 1,100 vehicles and create an online portal to manage applications and documentation. The government will also develop a dedicated charging-station network to support the rollout. According to the scheme’s official website, applicants may select a model from a list on the portal and must agree to vehicle tracking and registration conditions.

though the government press release did not provide a detailed breakdown of cost or down-payment requirements, third-party commentary suggests down payments may range between Rs 200,000 to Rs 250,000 depending on the model, with monthly instalments of around Rs 20,000–25,000 over five years.

The scheme aligns with Punjab’s broader strategy to promote electric mobility and meet its green-transport objectives. According to scheme summaries, the initiative supports unemployed youth and women, creates income-earning opportunities through commercial driving, and reduces reliance on fossil-fuel-powered taxis.

For context, Pakistan’s vehicle-import bill remains a heavy burden on the current-account and fuel-dependent transport is a major contributor to urban air pollution. By substituting electric taxis, the government anticipates both emissions reductions and lower operational costs for drivers. The official portal outlines that vehicles under the scheme will carry tracking devices and be registered commercially.

The reserved allocation of 30 taxis for women drivers marks a targeted effort to improve gender-inclusion in the commercial-vehicle sector. Additional benefits, according to commentary, include registration tax waivers and government-backed equity contributions.

The rollout timing places Lahore and other major cities in Punjab at the centre of the first deployment, as noted in scheme-explanation pieces.

Experts say that the scheme’s success will depend on the pace and coverage of the charging-station network, the quality of imported vehicle models, and drivers’ ability to generate sufficient earnings to cover repayments. It also intersects with broader policy shifts such as Pakistan’s Electric Vehicle Policy 2020 and provincial clean-mobility targets.
