Seattle Startup Powers Cities Using Undersea Volcanoes

A Seattle-based renewable energy startup, Endurance Energy, has achieved a groundbreaking milestone by using undersea volcanoes to generate electricity. This development demonstrates the first full cycle of drilling to energy production on an active underwater volcano, marking an important step towards harnessing geothermal energy beneath the ocean floor.

Breakthrough in Underwater Geothermal Energy

Endurance Energy successfully produced net-positive electricity, albeit for less than 10 seconds, from its innovative geothermal plant located on the seafloor near Tonga. This historic achievement was remotely operated from Seattle, allowing control over the system’s functions such as starting, stopping, and monitoring critical conditions like temperature and pressure without needing a physical presence underwater.

According to Andrew Redd, the company’s CEO, this initial test provided invaluable insights into operational challenges and system improvements necessary for future larger-scale generators. The upcoming plan involves deploying up to six 2-megawatt generators, each roughly the size of a shipping container, to validate commercial viability.

Advantages and Challenges of Seafloor Geothermal Plants

Building geothermal plants on the ocean floor allows the cool surrounding water to serve as an efficient natural cooling system, while the immense water pressure facilitates compact plant designs. However, experts caution that construction and maintenance costs may be higher than on land. For example, Stanford’s geothermal expert Roland Horne points to potentially elevated expenses due to the unique environment, while the U.S. Department of Energy is optimistic, projecting enhanced geothermal could provide up to 90 gigawatts of capacity nationwide by 2050.

Relevance for Pakistan and the Wider Region

Pakistan lies far from the Pacific Ring of Fire, where geothermal activity is pronounced, but the success of Endurance Energy’s approach signals a global shift toward innovative renewable resources. For Pakistan, grappling with energy shortages and a reliance on fossil fuels, breakthroughs like undersea geothermal could inspire new initiatives in geothermal or other alternative energies suited to its geography. Diversifying energy sources is critical for ensuring stable power supplies and reducing environmental impacts. Moreover, exploration of untapped geothermal potential could support long-term sustainability in energy production.

Endurance Energy’s pilot project highlights the strength of combining advanced technology with renewable energy innovation. As the planet strives to reduce reliance on carbon-intensive sources, such novel methods could play a vital role in the worldwide transition to greener power.

“On Sept. 27, we put a power plant on an active underwater volcano and made power,” Endurance Energy’s Andrew Redd remarked, emphasizing the significance of this first full-cycle test.
