55 Mobile Phones Snatched Near Karachi’s Red Zone

In a brazen daylight robbery, five armed assailants aboard three motorcycles snatched 55 expensive mobile phones from a trader near Karachi’s highly secured Red Zone. The incident, which caused alarm among the local business community, involved the theft of high-value smartphones along with two cartons and a bag containing the stolen devices.
Following the incident, Additional Inspector General (IG) Karachi Azad Khan took immediate cognizance and directed Deputy Inspector General (DIG) South to submit a detailed report. The IG emphasized the urgency of the investigation and ordered law enforcement agencies to use all available resources to apprehend the perpetrators and recover the stolen items.
This robbery adds to the growing concerns over escalating street crime rates in Karachi. Data released by the Citizens-Police Liaison Committee (CPLC) revealed an alarming number of criminal incidents totaling 4,671 reported cases citywide in May alone. Among these, mobile phone theft at gunpoint was prominent, with 1,860 devices reportedly stolen during the same month.
The surge in street crimes also extends to vehicle theft, with 445 motorcycles snatched at gunpoint and over 2,200 bikes stolen in various incidents. Automobiles have not been spared either, with 20 vehicles forcibly taken and 106 stolen from parking areas or residences. Additionally, the city experienced one bank robbery and 10 extortion cases during May.
Violent incidents have also led to the tragic loss of 56 lives in the past month, underscoring the critical need for enhanced security measures. Notably, there were no reported cases of kidnapping for ransom in this period.
The spike in thefts and violent crime has prompted citizens to call for increased police patrolling and stricter enforcement across Karachi. Authorities have been urged to implement comprehensive measures to curb the rising crime trend and reassure public safety in the metropolis.
