Flood-Hit Consumers gain Relief Under Cabinet Power Plan

The federal cabinet has approved a Rs10.8 billion relief package designed to support flood-hit electricity consumers in Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

Domestic consumers in declared flood-affected districts will have their August 2025 electricity bills waived, with refunds processed for households that have already cleared previous payments.

Industrial, commercial, and agricultural consumers will benefit from a seven-month deferral plan, stretching repayments from December 2025 until June 2026 to ease their financial burden.

To finance this initiative, Rs10.8 billion has been transferred to the Central Power Purchasing Agency, including Rs10.4 billion for domestic bill waivers.

Energy Minister Awais Leghari said the relief would reduce household pressure, ensuring families focus on rebuilding livelihoods rather than worrying about paying recurring electricity bills.

Information Minister Attaullah Tarar described the package as a key step in national rehabilitation, reflecting the government’s commitment to stand with citizens during difficult times.

Electricity bills often account for a major recurring household expense, and officials hope this measure provides breathing space for communities working hard to recover.

Earlier this week, Flood affectees in Chichawatni tehsil protested against Multan Electric Power Company for issuing August bills

Residents recalled that the Punjab chief minister had publicly announced complete electricity bill waivers for all villages impacted by devastating river Ravi floods.

They questioned why their village, Basti 18B/7-R, was excluded from relief measures, particularly since three neighbouring villages already received exemptions under the directive.
