Elon Musk Launches Grokipedia to Rival Wikipedia

Elon Musk’s AI company, xAI, officially launched Grokipedia, introducing an AI-powered online encyclopedia intended to compete directly with Wikipedia.

The first version, labeled 0.1, already contains more than 885,000 articles, compared with Wikipedia’s English-language entries exceeding seven million, demonstrating ambitious scope despite the platform’s relatively smaller scale.

Musk announced that the upcoming version 1.0 would be “10X better” than the current iteration, claiming the present version already surpasses Wikipedia in both reliability and perceived accuracy.

On X, Musk explained that Grok and Grokipedia strive to deliver “the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth,” while acknowledging that the platform will continuously evolve.

Initially scheduled for a September release, Musk postponed Grokipedia’s launch to “purge out the propaganda,” reflecting his long-standing criticism of Wikipedia for what he considers ideological bias.

In 2024, Musk repeatedly accused Wikipedia of being “controlled by far-left activists,” asserting that its editorial control limits the platform’s ability to serve as a definitive information source.

Grokipedia’s content is generated using artificial intelligence and xAI’s generative assistant Grok, including an article on Musk detailing his influence on technology, demographics, and perceived media biases.

Wikipedia, created in 2001, is collaboratively managed by volunteers, funded mainly through donations, and emphasizes a “neutral point of view,” allowing users to freely create and edit content.

AFP has contacted Wikipedia for comment regarding Grokipedia’s launch and Elon Musk’s claims about bias, editorial control, and the platform’s supposed ideological influence.
