Punjab to Introduce AI-Enabled Vehicles for Driving Tests

The Punjab Traffic Police have announced plans to modernise the driving licence system by deploying AI-equipped vehicles for on-road driving tests.

Officials say the initiative is intended to curb corruption and strengthen transparency within the licensing process, a longstanding concern for authorities and applicants alike.

A formal summary seeking approval for the purchase of 32 AI-powered vehicles has already been sent to the provincial government.

The vehicles will feature sensors, cameras and onboard processors capable of monitoring every stage of the driving test in real time.

Traffic officials say the technology will assess performance automatically, reducing opportunities for human interference.

The project is expected to cost more than Rs160 million, with installation expenses of around Rs600,000 per vehicle.

Two AI-enabled vehicles have already been tested on a trial basis, and the police plan to deploy the full fleet in Lahore and other major cities.

Authorities believe the automated system will make it far more difficult for unqualified drivers to secure licences.

The fleet is expected to become fully operational by December, marking a major shift in how driving tests are conducted in the province.
