Driving Abroad with Pakistan’s IDP: Key Points

An international driving licence issued by the traffic police allows Pakistani drivers to legally operate private vehicles abroad while carrying their national driving permit.
The licence is issued by competent authorities under the Vienna Convention of 1968 to Pakistani citizens travelling on tourist or business visas to drive abroad.
Reports say Pakistan’s international driving permit is valid in more than 150 countries and holders can legally drive in 132 countries including the UK.
Residents of Punjab planning to travel abroad, especially to the UK, can obtain the international driving licence from city traffic police offices or khidmat markaz.
Applicants must present an attested copy of a valid passport, two attested passport-sized photographs, three CNIC photocopies, and a photocopy of their national driving licence.

The annual fee for an international driving licence for a car is Rs1,830, comprising Rs1,350 per annum plus a Rs480 courier charge.
A three-year international driving licence for a car costs Rs4,530, while the annual and three-year fees for LTV licences stand at Rs2,330 and Rs6,030 respectively.
The international driving licence therefore enables Pakistani travellers holding valid national licences and visas to legally drive private vehicles abroad in covered jurisdictions.
