Chery PHEV bookings cross 2,000 in Pakistan

Plug-in hybrids gain traction as EV adoption faces constraints.

Chery Master Pakistan has received over 2,000 bookings for its plug-in hybrid vehicles, signaling early momentum for electrified mobility in Pakistan’s auto market. The bookings cover the company’s Tiggo PHEV lineup, including Tiggo 7, Tiggo 8, and Tiggo 9 models, reflecting demand across urban and family SUV segments, a company official said on Friday. The surge highlights a broader shift toward plug-in hybrid electric vehicles as consumers seek fuel-efficient alternatives amid high petrol prices and limited electric vehicle infrastructure.

Industry data shows buyers are prioritizing running costs and practicality over upfront vehicle pricing.Auto analysts say conventional vehicles averaging around 10 kilometres per litre have become increasingly expensive to operate, especially in city conditions, compared to hybrid and plug-in hybrid options offering lower per-kilometre fuel costs.

At the same time, structural barriers continue to slow full electric vehicle adoption in Pakistan. Charging infrastructure remains underdeveloped, while concerns over grid reliability and driving range persist, particularly outside major cities.Plug-in hybrids are emerging as a transitional solution, allowing drivers to use electric power for daily commutes while retaining internal combustion engines for longer travel.

This dual capability is seen as better aligned with current market conditions.Globally, the shift mirrors trends led by China, which has become the world’s largest automobile exporter, driven by strong growth in new energy vehicles including hybrids and EVs.

Chinese automakers are increasingly targeting emerging markets with scalable hybrid technologies. In Pakistan, recent activity in the SUV segment indicates rising consumer interest in electrified options, particularly in the hybrid category where infrastructure dependency is lower than fully electric vehicles.

Market observers say the initial booking volumes for Chery’s PHEV models suggest growing consumer acceptance of electrified mobility, even as the transition remains gradual. They expect plug-in hybrids to play a leading role in the near to medium term, as policymakers and industry stakeholders work to expand charging infrastructure and introduce supportive regulations for electric vehicles. The early success of Chery Master Pakistan’s PHEV lineup may encourage other automakers to introduce similar models, reinforcing the shift toward hybrid solutions in Pakistan’s evolving automotive market.
