Government Announces Petrol and Diesel Price Hike

The federal government has announced a significant increase in fuel prices, raising petrol by Rs14.92 per litre and high speed diesel (HSD) by Rs15 per litre. This revision, effective from May 9, brings the new price of petrol to Rs414.78 per litre while high speed diesel will cost Rs414.58 per litre.

The Petroleum Division confirmed the updated rates in an official statement on Friday. The price adjustment reflects ongoing efforts to manage the country’s fuel sector amidst economic challenges.

Petrol is predominantly used in private vehicles such as small cars, rickshaws, and motorcycles, which means this hike will directly impact the household budgets of middle and lower-middle income groups. The increase in petrol prices is likely to affect daily commuting costs and may lead to higher transportation expenses.

High speed diesel, on the other hand, is primarily consumed by heavy transport vehicles and large generators. This fuel type is critical for freight movement and industrial power generation, meaning the price increase could also have a cascading effect on logistics and industry operating costs.

Details of the price changes are as follows:

Fuel Type Old Price (per litre) New Price (per litre) Change
High Speed Diesel (HSD) Rs399.58 Rs414.58 + Rs15.00
Motor Spirit (Petrol) Rs399.86 Rs414.78 + Rs14.92

This price revision follows previous adjustments and comes at a time when fuel costs remain a significant concern for consumers and businesses alike. The government’s decision highlights the ongoing challenges in balancing fiscal requirements with the economic pressures faced by citizens.

As fuel prices form a core component of transportation and industrial cost structures, the announced hike may lead to increases in prices of goods and services over time, affecting inflation rates and purchasing power across the country.
