Joseph Vijay Sworn in as Tamil Nadu Chief Minister

Indian film star C. Joseph Vijay took oath as the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu on Sunday after his party, Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), secured support to form a coalition government. Vijay’s party emerged as the single largest force following the state elections but was initially short of a simple majority in the 234-member assembly.
The TVK, founded just two years ago, won 108 seats and later gained backing from smaller parties including the opposition Congress, bringing its total strength to 120 seats. This enabled Vijay to claim leadership of the southern Indian state’s government.
The swearing-in ceremony was held at Chennai’s Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium, attended by thousands of supporters chanting “Mudhalvar,” Tamil for Chief Minister. During his speech, the 51-year-old Vijay described himself as a common man without a royal political lineage.
He emphasized plans to address fundamental issues such as improving education, ration supplies, healthcare, drinking water, roads, and public transport. His initial policy priorities include measures to reduce electricity costs and enhance women’s safety.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated Vijay on his appointment, affirming that the central government would collaborate with the new administration to improve people’s livelihoods.
Vijay, who was born to a Christian father and Hindu mother, began his career as a child actor in 1984 and rose to fame as a charismatic film star known as “Thalapathy” or “leader” in Tamil. His movies often combined action with social themes, addressing issues like farmers’ welfare and electoral transparency.
Launching the TVK in 2024, Vijay promised to combat corruption and promote social justice, challenging the dominance of the traditional Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam and All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam parties that have ruled Tamil Nadu for decades.
Tamil Nadu is a key industrial state in India, renowned for manufacturing automobiles, electronics, and smartphones, notably serving as a hub for Apple iPhone production.
Political analysts attribute Vijay’s electoral success to his massive fan base and the younger generation’s desire for new leadership. Despite allegations of crowd management issues during rallies and a tragic stampede last September that resulted in fatalities, his popularity remained strong.
Political commentator Sumanth Raman noted that Vijay’s cult-like following means his supporters do not question his leadership.
As a political novice, Vijay now faces the task of translating his widespread appeal into effective governance in Tamil Nadu.
