Instagram to Introduce Paid AI Features for Users

Instagram will soon require users to pay for extended access to its artificial intelligence features, confirmed Adam Mosseri, Instagram’s chief, during a recent Q&A session on the platform. This marks the end of Instagram’s free unlimited usage of Meta’s AI-powered image and video generation tools.

Mosseri explained that while Instagram currently offers these AI tools for free, usage is capped to manage the high costs associated with running these sophisticated AI models. He indicated that users will be able to subscribe for increased daily usage limits, making the free tier effectively a limited trial funneling users toward subscription plans.

“Basically, these AI models are very expensive to run, and so we try to just offer them for free, but we have a cap on how many times you can use them per day. Eventually, you’re going to be able to subscribe to be able to get access to more, we’re working on that right now,” Mosseri said.

The subscription model is already hinted at within the Instagram app, where free users encountering daily limits on Muse-powered effects receive prompts to subscribe to Meta for continued access. The company recently launched Instagram Plus as an add-on, and another broader Meta One subscription plan already exists covering other premium AI features, including unlimited functions on Meta’s AI glasses.

This transition comes amid Meta’s significant investment in AI infrastructure, which reportedly amounts to $600 billion in the US alone. The financial pressure to support AI-driven services means that Meta must either restrict usage or monetize access to sustain its offerings.

This development coincides with Meta pulling back the controversial Muse Image remix feature after privacy concerns, emphasizing the company’s evolving strategy to balance innovative capabilities with user trust and cost management.

For Pakistani content creators and regular Instagram users, this change signals a shift towards paid AI access, which may impact how they leverage Instagram’s AI tools for content creation and engagement on the platform going forward.
