Auto Loans Reach Rs. 407 Billion Amid Falling Car Sales

Despite a noticeable dip in vehicle sales, Pakistan’s auto financing sector recorded a significant rise in September, with outstanding auto loans reaching Rs. 407 billion, according to data from the State Bank of Pakistan. This marks the 22nd straight month of growth in auto loan balances, increasing from Rs. 393.3 billion in August.

Auto Financing Continues to Grow Despite Sales Decline

September saw vehicle sales drop by 12 percent compared to the same period last year, with 15,104 units sold, including cars, SUVs, pickups, and vans. This decline is linked to delays in the new auto policy and tax uncertainties surrounding hybrid vehicles. However, loan disbursements are not immediately impacted by monthly sales figures, as financing reflects previously approved and processed loans.

Interest Rates and Market Dynamics Drive Loan Growth

The State Bank’s decision to hold the policy rate steady at 11.5 percent has helped maintain relatively affordable borrowing costs, encouraging consumers to seek financing despite market challenges. Mohammed Sohail, CEO of Topline Securities, explained that while the rise in loans is expected to continue, it may slow down due to increases in the Karachi Interbank Offered Rate (KIBOR) and ongoing policy uncertainties.

Another factor underpinning this trend is the growing acceptance of new car models and brands, especially Chinese makes. Historically, auto loans were concentrated around established Japanese and Korean brands, but consumer confidence is broadening to include hybrids, plug-in hybrids, and electric vehicles, which supports diversified loan demand.

Implications for Pakistani Car Buyers and Market Outlook

Although September’s sales data was soft, the overall fiscal year quarter painted a more optimistic picture, with auto sales rising 19 percent to 50,480 units year-on-year. This indicates the sector is on a recovery path.

For Pakistani consumers, the resurgence of car financing options is notable, making vehicle ownership more accessible again. However, sustained affordability of auto loans will depend on interest rate movements and clarity in government policies. As more brands enter the market and financing acceptance broadens, prospective buyers have better options and flexibility.

Looking ahead, increasing loan volumes might translate into stronger retail vehicle sales if economic conditions remain stable and supportive for borrowers.
