Li Auto CEO Explains Why Company Avoids Sedans

Li Auto, a prominent Chinese electric vehicle manufacturer, has explained the strategic reasoning behind its avoidance of sedan models, setting it apart from many competitors in the EV market. The company’s CEO, Li Xiang, recently elaborated that producing sedans conflicts with Li Auto’s core design philosophy centered on maximizing space and comfort.

During a discussion on Weibo, Li Xiang stated that the brand’s commitment to the concept of “home” in its vehicles means prioritizing spacious and comfortable interiors. Sedans, he noted, naturally limit interior space compared to SUVs or MPVs, which are the primary vehicle types in Li Auto’s current lineup.

Furthermore, Li stressed that increasing a sedan’s height to compensate for interior space would negatively affect the car’s proportions and overall stance. He emphasized that vehicle proportions are crucial in defining a car’s character, and Li Auto aims to achieve perfect visual harmony in this respect.

Currently, Li Auto’s product range includes several models, all of which are SUVs or multi-purpose vehicles. These include the extended-range electric vehicle (EREV) series — Li L6, Li L7, Li L8, and Li L9 — as well as battery electric vehicle (BEV) models such as Li i6, Li i8, and Li Mega. The latter is an electric MPV, while the rest are SUVs.

Although the company is focused on its existing product lines, Li Xiang did not completely dismiss a future sedan launch. He indicated that such a move would depend on significant market demand and the achievement of a revenue milestone estimated at 300 billion yuan (approximately $43.9 billion). Only when this target is reached will Li Auto consider developing sedan models.

In the meantime, Li Auto is advancing its SUV lineup with the upcoming launch of the Li L9 Livis, which will be unveiled on May 15. This flagship EREV SUV introduces the company’s first application of its self-developed 5-nanometer M100 smart driving chip, offering impressive computational power at 2560 TOPS, significantly surpassing many existing systems in the market.

The Li L9 Livis is equipped with a 72.7-kWh battery pack providing a CLTC range of 420 kilometers on a single charge and supports 5C supercharging. Combining electric range and fuel, the vehicle achieves a total range exceeding 1,500 kilometers, emphasizing practicality alongside performance.

Li Auto’s strategy highlights a clear product focus designed to deliver on customer preferences for spacious, comfortable vehicles with strong technological innovation. The company’s approach contrasts with some local competitors who have included sedans in their portfolios, underscoring Li Auto’s unique positioning in China’s rapidly evolving EV landscape.

In its recent sales performance, Li Auto delivered 34,085 vehicles in April 2026, a modest increase from the previous year but a decline compared to the prior month, reflecting broader market dynamics in the automotive sector.
