UBTECH Begins Delivery of Realistic Companion Robots
Chinese robotics manufacturer UBTECH has officially started delivering its highly realistic humanoid companion robots, known as the U1 series. These lifelike robots, which have been dubbed “cyber boyfriends” and “cyber girlfriends” by social media users, began shipping in September and are now available at dealerships in China and South Korea.
About UBTECH’s U1 Companion Robots
The U1 robots come in male and female models, measuring 183 cm and 168 cm tall respectively, and feature silicone skin enhanced with intricate details such as pores, blood vessels, and fingerprints, giving them an exceptionally realistic appearance. Each robot is equipped with 88 servo joints enabling around 90% of typical human movements. These companions are designed to engage naturally by maintaining eye contact, carrying conversations, and responding to over 20 human emotions with an accuracy exceeding 90%.
The robots operate using an on-device AI system powered by a Rockchip RK3588 processor, ensuring all user data remains within the device rather than being uploaded to external servers. UBTECH emphasizes that this AI fosters enduring companionship through ongoing emotional interactions.
Variants and Market Expansion
There are three different U1 robot variants offered by UBTECH. The U1 Lite starts at 119,800 yuan (approximately PKR 4.7 million), the U1 Pro costs 169,800 yuan (about PKR 6.7 million), and the premium U1 Ultra is priced at 990,000 yuan (roughly PKR 39 million for the male model) and 880,000 yuan (around PKR 34.6 million for the female model). Sales are restricted exclusively to adults.
Demand has been robust since the June 30 launch, with orders surpassing 13,000 units. However, realistic delivery goals are set for 1,500 to 2,000 units in 2026. The company continues to expand its presence, including opening a dedicated “U1 World” showroom in Seoul’s Gangdong district and partnering with automotive dealerships in Beijing to showcase the robots through Mercedes-Benz and Hyundai outlets.
Why This Matters for Pakistan
UBTECH’s success exemplifies rapid advancements in AI and robotics, sectors that Pakistan is keen to develop as part of its emerging tech ecosystem. The growing companionship robot market, predicted to scale from billions to trillions of yuan in the coming decade, could spur innovation and entrepreneurship opportunities across South Asia. The integration of emotionally intelligent AI systems into consumer products represents a significant leap toward more sophisticated human-machine interaction, potentially influencing future applications in healthcare, education, and customer service in Pakistan.
As Pakistani tech enthusiasts and companies observe this global trend, there may be increasing incentives to invest in AI research and robotics manufacturing domestically to remain competitive in a fast-evolving technological landscape.
UBTECH’s Chief Branding Officer Tan Min stated, “The companion robot industry is set to grow from tens of billions of yuan to trillions between 2026 and 2036,” highlighting the sector’s enormous future potential.
