National CERT and NTC Alert Staff on Physical Security Risks
Pakistan’s National Cyber Emergency Response Team (National CERT) alongside the National Telecommunication Corporation (NTC) has issued an urgent warning emphasizing the importance of strict physical security protocols to safeguard critical digital infrastructures.
Common Security Lapses Threaten Critical Systems
Recent advisories highlight that seemingly minor mistakes such as leaving identification badges unsecured or neglecting to lock computer screens can jeopardize highly sensitive facilities. National CERT and NTC have specifically cautioned against the practice of tailgating, where an unauthorized person gains access by following an authorized individual through a secured door. To counter this, employees are instructed to display their ID badges visibly at all times, refrain from lending or leaving badges unattended, and remain vigilant to prevent unauthorized entry.
Protecting Digital Security Starts with Physical Vigilance
The directives extend beyond access points, targeting workspace habits as well. Personnel must adhere to a clean-desk policy by keeping physical documents, notes, and passwords out of view, and consistently locking computer screens when stepping away. Another critical vulnerability addressed is the danger posed by unknown USB devices. The advisory warns against connecting untrusted external drives or peripherals to corporate systems, which could open the door to cyber threats through hardware-based attacks.
These measures have been promoted as part of the Cyber Month 2026 campaign, which aims to increase awareness about the integral role of physical security in protecting Pakistan’s digital environment. National CERT officials stress that every access badge, door, and workstation represents a potential risk vector that must be managed to prevent devastating cyber intrusions.
Implications for Pakistan’s Cybersecurity Landscape
In a nation increasingly reliant on digital infrastructure, vulnerabilities stemming from human error can undermine cybersecurity efforts, leading to data breaches or operational disruptions. Pakistani organizations, especially those managing critical infrastructure, stand to benefit from greater emphasis on employee awareness and physical control mechanisms as a frontline defense against cyberattacks.
National CERT encapsulated their guidance succinctly: “Stay Aware, Stay Secure,” underscoring that cybersecurity is not only about software defenses but also about maintaining vigilance in the physical realm.
