Google Gemini Renames Key AI Features for User Clarity

Google has introduced new names for several important functions within its Gemini AI platform, part of an ongoing effort to streamline user experience despite causing some confusion. The recent updates affect core tools that users rely on for productivity and AI interaction.

What’s Changing in Google Gemini Features?

One of the most significant adjustments is the transformation of “Gems” into “Skills.” Previously, Gems allowed users to create personalized AI assistants tailored to specific jobs like drafting emails or summarizing information. Now, Skills retain these capabilities but add the ability to combine several Skills within a single conversation, enhancing multitasking. Skills have been accessible in Google Workspace since October 5 and in the Gemini app since October 13. Current Gems will automatically convert to Skills by November 17, after which Gems can neither be created nor modified.

Additionally, Google has integrated the “Spark” AI agent directly into Gemini, renaming it “Tasks.” Spark was first unveiled at Google I/O 2026 as an autonomous assistant functioning 24/7 but existed in a separate section. With this update, users can switch between chat and task modes through a toggle below the prompt, and a new sidebar shows all scheduled, active, or completed tasks. The settings for Spark are now referred to as Task settings.

Earlier this year, Google also simplified “Extensions” by renaming them “Apps” to make the terminology more understandable for users, without changing how they work. This reflects the broader branding evolution Google has been implementing since rebranding Bard to Gemini in February 2024 and reorganizing its AI offerings under the Gemini umbrella.

Why These Changes Matter for Pakistani Users

As AI tools increasingly influence workflows globally, Pakistani professionals and developers using Google’s AI products must adapt to these naming updates to efficiently utilize Gemini’s capabilities. The addition of Skills’ stacking helps in managing diverse tasks seamlessly, which can improve productivity for freelancers, startups, and enterprises in Pakistan’s growing digital economy.

However, these frequent branding shifts can initially confuse users, as acknowledged by Google’s AI product lead, Sissie Hsiao, who admitted that the multiple name changes complicate user understanding. Pakistani users who rely on Google Workspace or Gemini for AI-powered assistance should update themselves on these modifications to avoid disruptions in workflows.
