Saudi Arabia launches live crowd updates for Umrah pilgrims

Saudi Arabia has unveiled an innovative digital service designed to assist Umrah pilgrims by providing real-time information on crowd density at Islam’s two holiest sites—the Grand Mosque in Mecca and the Prophet’s Mosque in Medina. This initiative aims to alleviate congestion and enhance the overall pilgrimage experience.

Real-time Updates to Manage Pilgrim Crowds

The new service offers live crowd data at critical locations within the mosques, including the Tawaf area surrounding the Holy Kaaba and the Sa’i corridor between Safa and Marwa. Pilgrims can access these updates instantly via a digital platform, allowing them to select less crowded times for their rituals, thereby improving safety and comfort during their visit.

Interactive Maps and Inclusive Features

An interactive map is integrated within the system, covering significant religious landmarks such as Maqam Ibrahim, Safa and Marwa in Mecca, as well as Al Rawdah Al Sharifah and the Prophet’s Chamber in Medina. This map features nearly 950 points of interest and offers over 100,000 route options spanning 17 categories, enabling visitors to navigate the mosques with ease.

Additionally, more than 650 QR codes embedded throughout the sites provide quick access to information regarding available facilities and services. The platform is also tailored to support individuals with disabilities by highlighting accessible routes and landmarks, ensuring inclusive access for all pilgrims.

Significance for Pakistani Pilgrims and Beyond

This technological advancement is especially relevant for Pakistan, a country that sees thousands of its citizens embark on Umrah annually. By reducing overcrowding and simplifying navigation, the platform promises a safer, more organized pilgrimage experience. It reflects Saudi Arabia’s ongoing commitment to leveraging modern technology to facilitate worshippers and enhance crowd management in spaces that draw millions each year.

According to officials involved in the initiative, the system’s integration with on-site digital display screens allows pilgrims to receive guidance directly during their visit, illustrating a comprehensive approach to combining digital innovation with religious tradition.
