Staff Report

The Indian military has said that it was an accidental missile launch into Pakistan that took place in March 2022.

New Delhi has explained that the launch of a missile into Pakistan took place in March 2022, due to a ‘technical malfunction’ during maintenance.

Indian Times has reported that the Indian Air Force (IAF) submitted these details to the court regarding the launch of a BrahMos supersonic missile into Pakistan.

The Indian Times has quoted a statement the IAF made to the Delhi High Court.

The incident took place on March 9, 2022, when an Indian missile violated Pakistan’s airspace.

Pakistan had condemned that incident but it had refrained from taking any countermeasures.

The Indian Air Force (IAF) has shared its findings this week relating to misfire. It said that the missile’s combat connectors, which “remained connected to the junction box,” had led to the accidental launch of the missile.

It further revealed that the unit commander of a road convoy, transporting the missile launcher had failed to ensure safe transit of the convoy.

He had not ensured the disconnection of combat connectors of all missiles loaded.

The Indian Air Force has also admitted that the missile incident had caused tension between Pakistan and India.

It further acknowledged that three officials, accompanying the missile launcher were also for misconduct.

The IAF submitted a statement in response to a petition Wing Commander Abhinav Sharma had filed in the Delhi High Court.

He is one of those three officers who were dismissed and held Air Commodore and Squadron Leader JT Kurien responsible for the incident.

However, the IAF had ruled out the blame saying that Kurien “was not responsible for the operations unit had undertaken.

The US had accepted India’s explanation but China had urged the two countries to conduct a joint probe and find ways to avoid future “misunderstanding and misjudgment,”.

It noted that both are “important countries in South Asia, who bear responsibilities to maintain regional security and stability.
