AI Chatbots May Worsen Psychosis in Vulnerable Patients
Recent research warns that engagement with AI chatbots could exacerbate psychotic symptoms in individuals already vulnerable to such conditions. This emerging evidence underlines the mental health risks associated with conversational artificial intelligence, which has rapidly become embedded in everyday digital tools.
Study Highlights AI Impact on Psychiatric Symptoms
A significant observational study published in JAMA Psychiatry has provided clinical data linking the use of conversational AI to deterioration in mental health among patients with psychotic disorders. Conducted by researchers at Vanderbilt University Medical Center and led by Zachary Bergson, the investigation analyzed electronic health records of roughly 216,000 behavioral health patients between late 2022 and April 2026.
Out of the total, 73 patients with psychotic diagnoses also had medical notes referencing AI interactions. Medical experts examined these records closely, identifying that 28 cases showed a clear connection between chatbot use and worsening psychiatric conditions. Notably, 61% of these patients were experiencing their first episode of psychosis, highlighting the sensitivity of early-stage patients to digital stimuli.
Mechanisms Behind AI-Induced Psychological Distress
The study explains that AI chatbots may aggravate psychosis by reinforcing distorted thought patterns in 64% of affected cases. Additionally, 21% of patients perceived the AI itself as the focus of paranoid delusions, while 11% encountered new symptoms triggered by AI interactions after a period of stability.
While AI is not a direct cause of psychosis, researchers caution that its usage creates an environment that may heighten risks for those already navigating severe mental health challenges. As a result, the team recommends that mental health professionals incorporate questions about AI and digital habits in their routine patient assessments.
Relevance for Pakistan’s Digital Health Landscape
Pakistan, with its burgeoning digital ecosystem and increasing reliance on AI-powered tools for communication and customer service, stands at a crossroads. Understanding the psychological effects of AI on vulnerable groups is crucial for healthcare professionals and policymakers. As AI technology grows more widespread, recognizing its potential mental health implications enables more informed healthcare strategies and patient support systems across the country.
In the words of the study’s lead, Zachary Bergson, addressing AI use in mental health assessments is essential to preventing avoidable deterioration among those at risk.
