Canada Offers PR to 33,000 Work Permit Holders

Canada has announced a one-time initiative to allow up to 33,000 foreign workers on work permits. The country has asked to apply for permanent residency over 2026-27 under the new Immigration Levels Plan for 2026-28.

Under the plan, Canada has set an annual target for new permanent residents at around 380,000 from 2026.

Immigration policy focuses on economic migrants already in Canada rather than new temporary entrants, according to Global News

The measure is aimed at supporting the Canadian labour market by retaining skilled workers who are already contributing financially and socially.

Canada has announced permanent residency amid broader changes, which include reduced targets for temporary foreign workers and international students.

This policy provides an important opportunity for eligible workers. However, the details about occupation qualifications, the application process, and the date of the opening process are still pending.

The shift is seen as part of Canada’s strategy to stabilise immigration flows. It is also aimed at easing housing and service-capacity pressures, and ensuring long-term integration of newcomers.
