Ex-NADRA Official Arrested for Assisting Iranian in Fake Pakistani ID
The Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) has detained a former assistant director of the National Database and Registration Authority (NADRA) in Karachi for allegedly helping an Iranian citizen acquire a Pakistani identity card unlawfully. The suspect, identified as Ziaul Haq Arain, previously held the position of Assistant Director (Technical) at NADRA’s Mega Siemens Chowrangi branch.
The investigation began when two passengers, traveling with Pakistani passports on a flight to Qatar, were intercepted at Karachi’s Jinnah International Airport. They were suspected of having falsified national identities, and under questioning, both admitted to being Iranian nationals who had paid for fraudulent Pakistani identification documents.
Details of the Illegal Identity Card Operation
The Anti-Human Trafficking Circle in Karachi conducted further inquiries, linking Arain to the issuance of a Pakistani identity card for one of the Iranian nationals, identified as Mohammad Akbar. His involvement reportedly facilitated the illegal processing of this government-issued document.
The FIA is continuing its interrogation of Arain while scrutinizing NADRA records and documentation related to the case. Officials indicated that the investigation aims to track down others involved in the network of illicit identity card issuance, including agents and facilitators.
Importance for Pakistan’s Identity Security
This incident underscores ongoing challenges in safeguarding the integrity of Pakistan’s identity system managed by NADRA, an agency critical to national security and administrative functions. Illegal procurement of identity cards by foreigners threatens the country’s ability to monitor residency and control illegal immigration. It also raises concerns about the potential misuse of Pakistani identification in cross-border crimes and terrorism.
“This case highlights vulnerabilities that need to be addressed to maintain the sanctity of Pakistan’s identity infrastructure,” an FIA spokesperson remarked. Strengthening verification processes and monitoring mechanisms is essential for Pakistan to prevent similar breaches in the future.
For Pakistani citizens and government authorities, this event serves as a reminder of the importance of vigilance and robust administrative controls in identity management systems, crucial for ensuring national security and maintaining public trust.
