Ford Racing R125 Mustang Makes a Strong Comeback for SEMA 2026
At SEMA 2026 held in Las Vegas, Ford showcased a meticulously restored and upgraded 1966 Mustang, named the Ford Racing R125 Mustang, bringing together classic styling with modern performance enhancements.
Power and Performance Upgrades
The highlight of the R125 is its powerful 347-cubic-inch (5.7-litre) V8 engine which produces 360 horsepower and 400 lb-ft of torque. This engine employs Ford’s Boss small-block architecture, enhanced with aluminum cylinder heads and an electronic fuel injection system from Edelbrock Pro-Flo. This modern fuel injection replaces the original carburetor system, ensuring improved cold starts, throttle responsiveness, and everyday drivability without losing the traditional V8 engine sound and feel.
Coupled to this engine is a TREMEC TKX-600 five-speed manual transmission, offering more durable and smoother shifting performance than its predecessor, the TREMEC TKO. The transmission’s compact size allows it to fit into the Mustang’s original chassis with minimal structural alterations, preserving the car’s historic bodywork.
Design and Heritage
Maintaining the iconic long hood and fastback roofline of the 1966 Mustang, the R125 retains its classic aesthetics with a black, red, and gold paint scheme paying homage to Henry Ford’s historic 1901 Sweepstakes race car. This race victory played a crucial role in securing the funding that led to Ford Motor Company’s launch.
Unlike many extreme restomod projects, Ford has chosen to keep the R125’s exterior design close to its original form, avoiding aggressive body modifications and widebody kits. This approach underlines Ford’s commitment to honoring the Mustang’s legacy while integrating modern technology.
Restomod Concept and Availability
The R125 Mustang is a celebration of Ford’s 125-year racing heritage and serves as a demonstration of how vintage muscle cars can be brought into the modern era using parts available through Ford Racing’s performance catalogue. The engine, fuel injection system, and five-speed gearbox are accessible to enthusiasts looking to customize their cars, although Ford has not announced plans to sell complete R125 conversion kits or finished vehicles.
This project contrasts with some other SEMA builds, like Nissan’s updated classic models, by blending modernization with preservation of the traditional V8 configuration. Ford views the R125 as a practical example for Mustang owners who desire an authentic performance upgrade without compromising the vehicle’s classic character.
Why This Matters for Pakistan
For Pakistani automobile enthusiasts and classic car collectors, the R125 Mustang highlights a growing trend toward restomods—vehicles that combine classic design with contemporary mechanical improvements. This approach preserves automotive heritage while enhancing performance and reliability, aligning well with Pakistan’s emerging classic car restoration scene. Additionally, the availability of aftermarket performance parts can encourage more enthusiasts within Pakistan to consider upgrading their vintage cars practically and affordably.
Reflecting on the R125, Ford’s commitment to marrying history with innovation offers inspiration to local restorers aiming to blend style, power, and modern usability in their classic rides.
“The Ford Racing R125 shows how easy it can be to upgrade a classic car with modern parts available today,” said a Ford spokesperson at the event.
