Pakistan Railways Unveils Upgraded 20-Coach Karakoram Express

Pakistan Railways has introduced a modernized version of the Karakoram Express featuring 20 coaches, aimed at enhancing the travel experience between Lahore and Karachi. The upgraded train was formally launched at Lahore Railway Station by CEO Muhammad Hafeezullah.

Enhanced Travel Facilities and Service

This revamped Karakoram Express offers four distinct travel classes: AC Sleeper, AC Business, AC Standard, and Economy, catering to the diverse needs of passengers. Running under a private-sector management model, the train departs daily at 3 PM from both Lahore and Karachi and completes the journey in approximately 19 hours.

Key stations along the route include Raiwind, Sahiwal, Khanewal, Bahawalpur, Rohri, Nawabshah, Hyderabad, Landhi, and Drigh Road. Passengers can enjoy various amenities such as mineral water, freshly prepared meals, bedding, mobile charging, Wi-Fi access, and an infotainment system. Additionally, travelers in AC Sleeper and AC Business classes receive complimentary special services.

Significance for Pakistan Railway and Passengers

Handing over the commercial management of the train to the private sector reflects Pakistan Railways’ strategic effort to upgrade service standards and improve passenger comfort. This move could potentially pave the way for revitalizing long-distance rail travel in Pakistan, offering a competitive alternative to road and air transport.

Improved rail services like the upgraded Karakoram Express can significantly impact the daily lives of travelers by providing safer, more comfortable, and efficient transportation options. For Pakistan, a country with a vast population reliant on public transport, advancements of this nature are essential for fostering regional connectivity and supporting economic activity.

CEO Muhammad Hafeezullah remarked on the occasion, “Our goal is to provide modern and reliable rail services that meet international standards and address the needs of travelers across the country.”
