Google Meet Audio Calls Now Available on Android Auto

Google Meet is expanding its accessibility by rolling out audio-only call support on Android Auto, allowing users to join scheduled meetings directly from their car dashboard. This wider release comes after an initial limited rollout started in April and will soon be available to all users.
The new feature is designed with safety in mind, providing a simplified interface that disables the phone’s camera and focuses solely on audio communication. The car dashboard offers basic controls such as mute, Bluetooth output switching, and call ending. Once a call begins, the connected phone automatically switches to an “On-the-Go” mode, which enlarges buttons and minimizes distractions for the driver.
The Android Auto app for Google Meet includes two main tabs: “Scheduled” and “History.” The Scheduled tab lists upcoming meetings that are already on the user’s calendar, enabling instant joining with a single tap and no pre-call screen. The History tab helps users quickly call recent contacts or groups. However, only meetings with pre-scheduled calendar entries will appear on the Scheduled tab for instant access via Android Auto.
Several features typically available on the Google Meet app are currently not supported in the car environment to maintain driver safety. Functions such as Hand Raise, Q&A, and Polls are disabled. In the event of breakout rooms, users will be automatically moved to the relevant session and returned to the main meeting once it ends.
Initial setup may require users to open and restart the Meet app on their phone before the integration functions properly in Android Auto. It is also noted that Work profile accounts are not supported, although ongoing work-related calls can be displayed on the car interface.
This rollout follows Google’s previous launch of Google Meet support on Apple CarPlay and features the updated Google Workspace icon for Meet. The update aims to enhance convenience for professionals who need to participate in meetings while commuting or traveling, without compromising safety or attention to the road.
